Persson first designed the game as a side project to avoid getting bored when he was working on other projects. The game is about placing blocks to create a world; the player can then interact with this world, using blocks to construct buildings, create machinery, or work on art projects.

The player can gather materials to use as building blocks, resources to use in crafting other items, and objects to use as weapons or other equipment.
